ITIL® 4 - an update

Throughout 2019, AXELOS have been working hard developing the advanced ITIL4 publications and gathering feedback from the Service Management community to further enhance the product. Sysop have now had visibility of the yet to be officially released content and are delighted to say that the updates provided in ITIL4 genuinely reflect what we felt was required for the evolution of Service Management into the digital age.

ITIL®4 Qualification scheme

We have previously announced the ITIL4 qualification scheme, with the ITIL Foundation course being well received from those organizations early to embrace and adopt ITIL4. The qualification scheme also includes 2 streams – ITIL Managing Professional and ITIL Strategic Leader. The courses that contribute towards these qualifications map onto the soon to be released official ITIL4 publications. When released these courses will be 3-days in duration with each covering a specific aspect of ITIL4. Sysop have now had visibility of the draft versions of these publications and can provide a summary of the content & therefore what to expect on these courses:

Create, Deliver & Support

For an organization to effectively create, deliver and support its products and services it is essential to understand value and how value is created across each and every activity performed across the Service Value Chain.

This publication will describe how value streams can be built and managed in a holistic way and how continual iterations and feedback loops can be included. It explores areas such as development, testing, knowledge, customer and employee feedback, new technologies, sourcing, and ways of managing work. This publication will focus on those activities in the areas of Obtain/Build, Design & Transition and Deliver & Support.

Drive Stakeholder Value

To drive stakeholder value, all stakeholders must contribute to the co-creation of service value.

The Drive Stakeholder Value publication aims to guide stakeholders, whether they are customers or service providers, through the principles and practices of co-creating value through services. It will discuss the main steps of a customer journey, providing guidance on how to co-create the most valuable journey. The publication therefore focuses on activities related to accepting Demand, Engaging with Stakeholders and realizing Value.

High Velocity IT

Organizations are becoming increasingly digital enabled and the scope of the High Velocity IT publication is the primary activities in the digital value chain.

The more digital parts of an organization demand a significantly different way of thinking and working than traditional ‘operating models’ for IT service management.

The publication therefore focusses on all activities across the Service Value Chain with the emphasis on accelerated value streams.

Direct, Plan & Improve

This publication explores and explains principles, methods, and techniques that can be universally used to direct, plan, and improve.

Thorough planning creates a shared understanding of how work will be organized and managed, allowing contributors to understand their roles and to coordinate and collaborate efficiently and effectively.

Identifying and acting upon improvement opportunities ensures that the organization grows and remains successful and competitive over time. The publication therefore focuses on activities in and around Plan and Improve.

Digital & IT Strategy

This publication will focus on the alignment of digital business strategy with IT strategy.

It also covers how disruption from new technologies are impacting organizations in every industry and how business leaders are responding. It will help IT leaders and aspiring leaders build and implement effective IT and digital strategy that can tackle digital disruption and drive success.

ITIL 4 Practices

Across ITIL4 there are 34 Practices, each of these practices makes a varying level of contribution across the activities within the Service Value Chain.

Therefore a particular practice could be relevant across some or even all of the publications outlined above. It is for this reason that it has been decided that the Practices will be covered in additional publications – ITIL Practice Guides. There will therefore be 34 publications outlining the detail of each of the practices to supplement that information found in the other ITIL publications. This content will not be covered in the other ITIL4 publications but will be referenced where appropriate.

Managing Professional Transition module

Any candidates who have 17 credits or more from any previous ITIL qualification schemes will meet the pre-requisites to take the Managing Professional Transition module to convert existing qualifications into the ITIL4 Managing Professional qualification (ITIL Experts have 22 credits).

ITIL Master

In order to become an ITIL Master a candidate will need to have achieved both the ITIL4 Managing Professional and ITIL4 Strategic Leader qualifications.

However, despite previous communication from Sysop indicating otherwise, there are additional steps to complete in order to be awarded ITIL Master status. The details of this are yet to be announced but it will likely require the submission of a documented example of how a candidate has practically applied the ITIL4 framework in their work experience.
