Description

Apollo 13 lifting offThe “Apollo 13 – an ITSM case experience™” is a simulation game that enables ITIL ® theory to be put in to practice. In this one day event participants will recognise and appreciate the benefits of adapting “best practice”. Game players will experience, for themselves, the results of not applying a process and the success of applying the process.

Improving Team work and Team processes

Situation: Working effectively with IT service management processes such as ITIL ® means that people from different IT units must work together as a team. However people are not used to working across organisational units and boundaries and do not always see the need or understand their role in the end-to-end process. In the Apollo 13 simulation game the participants are only successful in achieving their objectives if they agree and apply team working practices.

The benefits:

  • ITIL ® theory is put in to practice and proven for all participants
  • Participants can experiment with their own team roles
  • It is safe and secure environment in which to experiment
  • The changes to team behaviour will directly influence the results, these are made visible and can be discussed.

The team learns to:

  • analyse their own team process, individual and team behaviour
  • discuss and agree solutions to solve situations
  • implement solutions
  • improve their way of working and their effectiveness in a team.

Learning Objectives

The Apollo 13 simulation game can be used as a learning instrument to:

  • Run with current process and practices
  • Understand team roles and team behaviour and how these influence results
  • Understand team processes and team dynamics
  • Understand how team results are achieved

The game consists of four rounds, and takes the mission from:

  1. building the Apollo 13 rocket,
  2. the outbound route of the mission - to:
  3. the flight around the moon - and
  4. the return flight to earth

Each round has the following:

Preparation phase: where objectives, process design, roles and responsibilities are agreed.
Mission phase: where the issues encountered by the crew of Apollo 13 are reported and the game participants have to deal with and resolve all these issues within the phase of that mission.
Reflection: When the game round is complete the success of the mission phase is reviewed and changes for the following stage are defined and agreed prior to the next round.
