ITIL® Qualifications Explained

Attainment of the ITIL "Expert" Diploma is achieved by amassing a minimum number (22) of examination credits.

Most examinations are optional but the Foundation and “Managing Across the Lifecycle” modules are mandatory.

The main supporting modules are split into two groups : Lifecycle and Capability. Credits may be accumulated from either, or a combination of both, groups of examinations. In addition, the ITIL Practitioner is a standalone course outside of these groups but does contribute towards ITIL Expert.

ITIL Lifecycle courses are intended for candidates with considerable management experience in a service management environment. The courses are intense and will draw upon real-life experience within the classroom. Some of the exam questions assume experience that is not taught on the course.

ITIL Capability courses explore topics at a more detailed "practitioner" level. They are ideal for candidates with more limited experience - for example those just moving into a new service management role who wish to gain new knowledge for their new job.

ITIL Practitioner course is intended for those individuals who are likely to pay a key active role in driving a service or process improvement initiative. It builds on the principles from the Foundation course to empower an individual to go back to the workplace and make a real difference.

ITIL Managing Across the Lifecycle course is the mandatory over-arching module, intended to bring emphasis to the true ITIL purpose of managing services through the lifecycle.

ITIL Qualification Scheme and Credits

Lifecycle Modules

The Lifecycle group of examinations mirror the new ITIL books: Service Strategy; Service Design; Service Transition; Service Operations and Continual Service Improvement. The Lifecycle courses are intended for candidates with considerable management experience in a service management environment. The courses are intense and will draw upon real-life experience within the classroom.

Capability Modules

The Capability modules are designed to reflect how ITIL service management is implemented in practice by grouping the topics into logical functional areas: Planning, Protecting & Optimisation; Service Offerings & Agreements; Release, Control and Validation; and Operational Support and Analysis. The Capability courses explore topics at a more detailed "practitioner" level. They are ideal for candidates with more limited experience - for example those just moving into a new service management role who wish to gain new knowledge for their new job.

ITIL Practitioner

The ITIL Practitioner course focuses on the "HOW to make service management happen" rather than the detail of "WHAT service management processes do". The course offers practical guidance on how to "adopt and adapt" the ITIL framework to support your organisation's business objectives. As such it is the missing link in the ITIL qualification portfolio. It addresses the practical issues of: gaining management support, bringing about the cultural change and ensuring that best practice adds real and measurable value to the organisation.

ITIL Expert Bundles

Sysop recognises that an individual may have the goal to get to ITIL Expert in a relatively short space of time. We therefore offer our bundled set of courses based on the full package being completed within a 12-month window.

The price of these bundles is significantly discounted based on the full package being paid for prior to attendance on the first course date. We have the following packages available:

  • ITIL Expert Bridging bundle – This is a short-cut route for those individuals who have the ITILv2 Manager Certificate.
  • ITIL Expert Lifecycle bundle – The most commonly used route, combining all 5 of the Lifecycle courses with the over-arching Managing Across the Lifecycle course.
  • ITIL Expert Capability bundle – There is also the option to combine the 4 Capability Modules with the over-arching Managing Across the Lifecycle course.

We strongly recommend discussing these bundles with us prior to booking to determine the right option for you.
